Understanding the Scope of the ‘Workslop’ Problem

The findings from the Stanford and BetterUp study are stark: approximately 40% of full-time US employees have encountered workslop in the past month. This AI-generated output, ranging from reports and presentations to emails, often requires recipients to invest considerable effort in deciphering, correcting, or even redoing the work. Researchers estimate that, on average, individuals spend nearly two hours addressing each instance of workslop. This translates into a tangible financial cost, with estimates suggesting an invisible tax of around $186 per employee per month, potentially costing large organizations upwards of $9 million annually in lost productivity.

The Emotional and Interpersonal Toll of AI-Generated Content

Beyond the quantifiable loss in productivity, the emotional and interpersonal costs of workslop are significant. Employees who are on the receiving end of this subpar AI-generated content report feelings of annoyance (affecting 53% of respondents), confusion (38%), and even offense (22%). These negative emotional responses inevitably spill over into workplace relationships. The study indicates that roughly 42% of respondents now view colleagues who send workslop as less trustworthy, and a concerning 32% are less likely to want to collaborate with those individuals in the future. Researchers point to a confluence of factors contributing to the rise of workslop. A primary driver appears to be the lack of adequate investment in employee training and the absence of clear organizational policies regarding AI tool usage. Many companies are rapidly deploying AI technologies without providing their workforce with the necessary guidance on how to use these tools effectively and ethically.
