Tech Mahindra Takes the Lead in IndiaAI Mission with 1-Trillion-Parameter LLM Development

In a move that signifies a major leap forward for India's artificial intelligence ambitions, Tech Mahindra has been selected as a key player in the government's ambitious IndiaAI Mission. The IT services giant is set to develop a sovereign large language model (LLM) boasting an impressive 1 trillion parameters. This initiative, announced by Tech Mahindra's CEO and Managing Director, Mohit Joshi, during the company's Q2 FY26 earnings conference, positions India at the forefront of global AI development and underscores a national commitment to fostering indigenous technological capabilities.

A Landmark in Sovereign AI Development

The development of a 1-trillion-parameter LLM represents a significant technical milestone, placing Tech Mahindra among the global leaders in advanced AI research and development. Mohit Joshi expressed the company's honor in being recognized by the Government of India for this prestigious mission, highlighting that it aligns perfectly with the nation's vision to bolster its leadership in the artificial intelligence domain. "As part of the mission, we are developing an indigenous sovereign large language model with 1 trillion parameters — a significant technical milestone," Joshi stated. In September, the government identified eight entities, including Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, and a consortium led by IIT Bombay named BharatGen, to spearhead the development of foundational LLMs under the IndiaAI Mission.
