This initiative marks a significant leap forward in empowering space missions with advanced, energy-efficient artificial intelligence. The development is further cemented by a strategic contract awarded by the Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA), aimed at commercializing the first neuromorphic System on Chip (SoC) specifically engineered for space applications.

The GR801 SoC: A Fusion of RISC-V and Neuromorphic Power

At the heart of the GRAIN product line is the GR801 SoC. This innovative chip represents a powerful synergy, integrating Frontgrade Gaisler’s established NOEL-V RISC-V processor with the cutting-edge Akida™ neuromorphic AI technology developed by BrainChip. BrainChip is recognized as a pioneer in ultra-low power, fully digital, event-based neuromorphic AI. This unique combination is meticulously designed to enable sophisticated AI-driven applications within the harsh and power-constrained environment of space. The GR801 SoC is engineered to support a broad spectrum of space missions, encompassing both commercial and institutional endeavors, thereby unlocking new application potentials while strictly adhering to critical power and weight limitations.

The development and commercialization of the GR801 SoC are significantly bolstered by collaborations with key industry players and research institutions. Furthermore, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, through its Neurocomputing Systems (NCS) team led by Prof. Jörg Conradt, is contributing vital expertise in neuromorphic sensor and computing algorithms. This collaboration is focused on developing a demonstrator system that will feature a neuromorphic sensor directly interfacing with the GR801 device, offering a tangible showcase of its real-time capabilities in space applications.
